On Monday, Nov. 25, Officer Cooper Dawson from Greenville, TX, was ambushed and shot and subsequently passed away on Tuesday, the 26th. The 27-year-old officer was pursuing a repeat violent offender with several outstanding felony warrants whom he spotted getting into a vehicle. Dawson reportedly made an attempt at a traffic stop, but the suspect ran through the residential area nearby and ambushed Dawson as he rounded the corner by a house. The suspect opened fire, hitting the officer several times. Dawson was taken to the local hospital and then airlifted to Medical City Plano, where he passed away in the early hours of the morning.
Chief Chris Smith of the Greenville Police Department spoke in a press release, honoring Officer Dawson as a hero and praising his courage and dedication to the force. Chief Smith expressed sincere grief and frustration at the unnecessary and tragic death of this officer, saying, “We are hurting. We are hurting as a community… The grief we feel is indescribable.” Dawson spent years devoting himself to his community, receiving five commendations in his year and a half served with his team in the Greenville police department. Dawson’s line of duty-death is the first in Greenville in more than 100 years, and the community is both shaken and grieving the loss of Officer Dawson. As Cooper Dawson was a husband and a father, support is needed for his family members as they face their loss and mourn their loved ones.
