On August 9, protests arose regarding the 10th Anniversary of Michael Brown’s death, who was shot and killed by officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, MO. Wilson was found innocent of unjust use of deadly force by the Supreme Court, but there continue to be lingering tensions and anger at the decision to this day within the black community in the area.
In the chaos of the day, Officers were dispatched to the area as protestors were destroying personal property and fencing near the police station. The demonstration began as a peaceful one, but grew to be violent as the night carried on. Officer Travis Brown was sent to investigate the scene and as he was attempting to arrest one rowdy individual, he was pushed and sustained a severe brain injury after striking his head on the ground.
Thirty six year old Travis Brown joined the Ferguson police at the start of 2024, after completing 11 years with the St. Louis County Police. Having grown up with a father on the force, Brown was inspired to be a part of the change regarding police relationships with their communities. According to FPD Chief Troy Doyle, he wanted to make an impact and was just the kind of officer that you would want in your community.
Officer Brown is now in the hospital in a coma, making small improvements daily. His family says that his condition is critical, but stable, and they have hope for his recovery with encouraging marker signs of brain activity. As the road to recovery will be both long and challenging, support is needed for Brown’s family members and hospital bills, as the financial burden is significant with the medical care needed to address his condition. There has been an outpouring of support within the community for the family, including vigils and fundraising events.
